SEAN BATTLE IS BACK ON OUR STAGE, READY TO READ FROM HIS FIRST BOOK OF POETRY, “THE FORST OF BRICKS”. BOOKS WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR SALE BEFORE AND AFTER THE READING.
Born in Camden, NJ, Sean Battle is the combination of an ambitious mother and pro wrestling theatrics. He is the founder of EVOLVE NJ, an arts education brand where intersectionality equals accountability through artistry and academics. Within this is EVOLUTION Open Mic, of which Battle produces and hosts in Newark, NJ. Also an author, Battle’s first full-length collection of poems, The Forest of Bricks, was self-published in 2014. A random homework assignment in US History class would lead to his first poem, in the voice of a soldier in WWII. His work has led to an MFA in Poetry at Rutgers-Newark, and a BA in English at Rutgers-New Brunswick, where he was President of the Verbal Mayhem Poetry Collective. Battle has performed throughout North/Central Jersey and New York, most recently a featured poet in the Dodge Poetry Festival. His poems have been published in journals such as Borderline, Radius: Poetry from the Center of the Edge and The Legendary, as well as written and performed for the Raices Cultural Center production, Spirit of the Drum: History and Evolution of a Caribbean Tradition. FROM “Self Portrait as a Lab Rat Who Chose to Starve when Vegetables Were Served Over McDonalds”
I know where the pesticides lie—
colored rods codenamed
carrot and celery. Their mission:
Make me a more acceptable
brown rat. History shows
my ancestors with golden
arches drawn on red boxes.
Chicken nuggets and Big Macs
kept my heritage alive. Foolish
of me to think these white coats
would respect that. I’d rather
have my tummy be a terrier, digest
my organs with its jaws. May this
be my martyrdom, so in the future,
when orders for surrender
are growled and snarled, I am
celebrated through defiant squeaks.
